Manchester Hawks 1 stormed the club derby at Chorlton High School South, sweeping aside Manchester Hawks 2 19-7 to open the Northern Regional League season on top.

It mattered because the first result of a long campaign immediately put Hawks 1 in the promotion zone and left Hawks 2 rooted to the bottom and in the relegation zone.

The Match

Derby day had an unusual edge: two teams from the same Manchester Hawks club, but with very different outcomes on the court. Manchester Hawks 1 asserted control early and never loosened their grip, building pressure through organised recycling in attack and disciplined defence that limited clean looks at the korf. By the time the game settled, the “away” side in name only were already dictating tempo and shot selection.

With the scoring spread not provided, the headline numbers tell their own story: Hawks 1 racked up 19 korfs while Hawks 2 were held to 7. The leaders’ ability to keep converting while also squeezing their club-mates at the post area was the defining feature, turning a potentially tricky internal derby into a statement performance.

The 12-korf margin is huge at this level, and it underlines the gap in cohesion and execution on the day. As the opening fixture of the competition’s 71-game schedule, it’s not a season verdict—but it is a clear early signal: Hawks 1 look ready to set the pace, while Hawks 2 have immediate work to do to avoid being cut adrift.

What It Means

• Manchester Hawks 1 jump to 1st with 2 points from P1 and a commanding GD +12; their form now reads W and they sit in the promotion zone.
• The league leaders are already 2 points clear of the chasing pack (all still on 0), a small gap in October but a useful one in a one-up, one-down style race for the single promotion place.
• Manchester Hawks 2 drop to 9th after one game with 0 points and GD -12; they are in the relegation zone and still 0 points from safety.
• There is at least a scheduling lifeline for the second team: they have one game in hand on the side above them, but they will need a response quickly to stop the early damage defining their season.
